Short answer
Why Is My Airtable Trigger Firing Repeatedly?
An Airtable trigger fires repeatedly when an automation updates a watched record, the record leaves and re-enters a view, or multiple automations monitor the same condition. Review run history for one record, identify the field changed before each run, then use a one-way status transition or processed timestamp that downstream actions do not reset.
Common causes
- An action writes to a field used by the trigger condition.
- The record repeatedly enters a trigger view as formulas recalculate.
- Several Airtable or external automations watch the same record state.
- A checkbox or status is cleared after processing, making the condition true again.
Diagnostic steps
- Turn off affected automations if repeated actions can contact customers or alter money.
- Trace one record through run history and compare field values between executions.
- Redesign the trigger around a one-way state such as Ready to Process to Processed.
- Test with one fresh record and verify that later action updates cannot requalify it.
Example
An automation watches a Ready view and then clears Ready at the end. Another update sets it again, causing a repeat. A processed timestamp provides a durable exclusion.
Caveats
View membership can change after linked-record, lookup, rollup, and formula recalculations even without a direct user edit.
