How to Adjust Dates and Times in Zapier Using Formatter Modifiers

How to use Zapier's built-in date and time modifiers directly in field mapping — adding or subtracting days, changing the output format, and converting timezones without adding a dedicated Formatter by Zapier step to your Zap.

How to Adjust Dates and Times in Zapier Using Formatter Modifiers

A common pattern in Zapier workflows is adding a Formatter by Zapier step purely to reformat or adjust a date before passing it to the next action. If you need to add 7 days to a trigger date, convert it to a different format, or strip the time component, you might think a Formatter step is required. Often it is not. Zapier's field mapping supports inline date and time modifiers — special syntax applied directly to a mapped field that adjusts the date without a separate step. This keeps Zaps shorter, reduces task consumption, and makes field mappings more readable.

What Date Modifiers Are

When you map a date field in Zapier's action step editor, you can append a modifier to the mapped value by clicking the field and using the format options that appear. These modifiers tell Zapier how to transform the date value at the moment it is passed to the action — no intermediate step required.

Zapier exposes date modifiers through the field mapping interface when you select a date/time field from a previous step. The modifier options typically include:

  • Format: Change the output date format (e.g., MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, Unix timestamp, ISO 8601)
  • Add time: Add a number of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years to the date
  • Subtract time: Subtract a duration from the date
  • Timezone conversion: Convert the date from one timezone to another

How to Apply a Date Modifier in Field Mapping

  1. In the Zap editor, open the action step where you need the adjusted date.
  2. Click into the date field and insert the date field from a previous step using the field picker.
  3. After the field is inserted, look for the modifier options — Zapier displays a dropdown or additional fields to set the format and offset.
  4. Set the desired format and/or add/subtract the duration you need.
  5. The preview updates to show what the transformed date will look like at runtime.

The modifier is stored as part of the field mapping configuration — it applies automatically every time the Zap runs.

Common Date Modifier Patterns

Add N days to a date (due date calculation)

A form submission trigger provides a start date. The action step creates a task with a due date 14 days later. In the due date field, map the trigger's start date field and set the modifier to add 14 days. No Formatter step needed.

Reformat a date for a specific API

A trigger provides a date in human-readable format ("January 15, 2025") but the API being called requires ISO 8601 format ("2025-01-15"). Apply the YYYY-MM-DD format modifier to the mapped date field — Zapier converts it at the point of mapping.

Strip the time from a datetime

A datetime field from a trigger includes a timestamp ("2025-01-15T14:30:00Z") but the destination field expects only a date ("2025-01-15"). The date-only format modifier outputs just the date portion.

Convert to Unix timestamp

Some APIs expect dates as Unix timestamps (seconds since epoch). The Unix timestamp format modifier converts any Zapier-recognized date field to this format directly in the field mapping.

Subtract days for a reminder date

An event has a date field. A reminder step needs the date 3 days before the event. Map the event date with a subtract-3-days modifier to generate the reminder date without a separate calculation step.

When You Still Need a Formatter Step

Date modifiers in field mapping cover the most common adjustments, but there are cases where a dedicated Formatter by Zapier step or a Code step is still required:

  • The adjusted date is needed in multiple downstream steps: A modifier applies to one field in one step. If three different action steps all need the same +7-day date, either apply the modifier independently in each step, or use a Formatter step once and map its output to all three steps.
  • Complex calculations: Last day of the month, business-day offsets, or multi-step date arithmetic require a Code step — see how to get the last day of a month in a Zapier Code step.
  • The output needs to be a text string combining a date and other text: "Your appointment is on [formatted date]" — Formatter's text step or a Code step handles string assembly; date modifiers only transform the date value itself.

Saving Steps with Modifiers

Each Formatter step in a Zap consumes a task on every run (on task-counting plans). Replacing a Formatter step used purely for date reformatting or offset with an inline field modifier saves one task per Zap run. On high-volume Zaps — hundreds or thousands of runs per month — this adds up. It also makes the Zap editor cleaner, since a step used only to add 7 days to a date is visual clutter that the field modifier eliminates.

Date modifiers in field mapping are one of Zapier's underused features. Most users reach for a Formatter step the moment they need a date reformatted or shifted, not realizing the adjustment can happen directly in the destination field. Check the modifier options before adding a Formatter step — for simple offsets and format changes, the modifier is almost always the right tool.
